What is Skin and it's Functions?

The human skin is a vital organ and covers the entire human body. It has multiple layers that guard the internal organs, protecting them from the external environment. It also acts as the first line of defence against foreign bodies. Skin is one of the most delicate and sensitive parts. Clear skin is healthy skin. The skin performs the following functions:

Regulation of body temperature: The skin plays an important role in regulation of body temperature. The skin, including the subcutaneous fat, is like a covering that protects the inner organs from external temperature fluctuations. The sweat glands and the blood circulation to the skin helps in maintaining a constant and comfortable body temperature, which is crucial for optimal functioning of the body organs.

Protection - The skin protects the body from environmental contaminants, toxins, ultraviolet rays, and mechanical trauma and injuries.

Sensation - The skin has receptors for touch, temperature, and pain. These sensations are then transmitted to the brain.

Immunity - The skin is the first line of defence against micro-organisms that may cause diseases. The skin contains specialized immune cells that identify and combat the invading microorganisms. So, if the skin is unhealthy or if there is a break in the skin, the micro-organism can gain entry inside the body, resulting in an infection.

Excretion - The skin helps in excretion of water, urea, ammonia, and uric acid, through sweat. These products are formed during the many chemical reactions happening in the body.

Endocrine - The skin helps in the production of vitamin D in the presence of sunlight. This vitamin D is important in maintaining bone health. In the present day, we live in an environment which is unhygienic and polluted. This unhygienic surrounding exposes us to various contaminants and infections that damage our skin health. Therefore, it is important to take proper care of the skin in order to help the skin function properly.
